In 1994, John Wayland from Portland, Oregon, embarked on an ambitious journey to electrify his 1972 Datsun 1200. What began as a modest conversion to explore the burgeoning world of electric vehicles transformed over two decades into a high-performance marvel that shattered records and redefined what EVs could achieve.

Humble Beginnings

Originally, the Datsun 1200 came with a gasoline engine producing 69 horsepower and 70 ft-lbs of torque—typical for a lightweight car of its era. When Wayland first converted the vehicle to electric power, it was a functional but unassuming example of early EV technology. Working out of his garage with limited tools and resources, Wayland relied on ingenuity and determination to bring his vision to life. However, his relentless passion for innovation and performance drove him to continuously upgrade and perfect the car over the years.
