EV conversions have critical devices that must always have 12V power. These include a BMS, thermal management modules, the vehicle entertainment system memory, and many other devices. All of these may present a parasitic draw on the 12V system's battery that oftentimes, drains it so low that the EV will not power-on. This is a problem not only with conversions, but with some factory EVs as well.
The 12V Battery Watchdog is the simple solution to this problem. It continuously monitors the voltage of the 12V system's battery, and when a specified low point is reached, it will output a +12V signal that you can use to turn on your DC/DC converter. Your converter must be a soft start type, like the TC/Elcon 1kW DC/DC or our Hawkeye Charger/DCDC combo, otherwise, you can use this +12V output to trigger a relay. The status LED will illuminate when active. Documentation for this product can be found on our Downloads page.
Note: Our SCM already has this 12V battery watchdog built in, so you do not need this product if you already have an SCM. It's recommended to use a DC/DC of at least 1kW with our default trigger voltage and duration of 12.7V and 4 minutes. Trigger voltage and duration can be customized, please contact us prior to ordering to request it, such as using a 12V (13.2V) lithium battery. It is good practice to always utilize a BMS and battery contactors that can shut off HV discharge should the HV battery get to a low SOC.
Internal relay is rated for 0.5A at 12VDC, and should be used for signal level only. Trigger voltage precision ± 0.5%.
